Alexa Won't Stop Listening (How to Fix It)

By Marlo Strydom · Updated

Alexa won't stop listening when Follow-Up Mode keeps a conversation open or nearby speech triggers another request. A frozen blue light can also be a stalled request. Start by matching the behavior: a brief listening window, repeated false wakeups, or a device that no longer responds.

The light pattern helps separate a normal listening window from a stalled request. A blue light can mean the Echo is listening, thinking, or responding, while a red light means the microphone is muted.

How to Stop the Active Blue Light

If your Alexa device is stuck with the blue light on:

  • Immediate Stop: Press the physical Mute button (microphone icon) on top of the device.
  • Check the setting: Turn off Follow-Up Mode if the light stays on briefly after each answer.
  • Restart: Unplug the Echo for 30 seconds if the light is frozen and the device does not respond.
  • Review false starts: Check Voice History and change the wake word if a TV or conversation keeps triggering the Echo.

Why Is My Alexa Stuck Listening?

First compare the light with Amazon's normal listening, thinking, and response patterns. Then use the symptom to choose a check:

Symptom Likely Cause
Blue light stays on for seconds after talking "Follow-Up Mode" is active.
Blue light turns on randomly in silence A sound may have been treated as the wake word.
Blue light is stuck solid permanently The request may be stalled or the connection may have dropped.

Fix 1: Mute the Microphone

If you are worried about privacy, press the microphone-off button. A red light shows that the microphone is muted. Leave it muted while you review the Alexa app or move the device away from a TV.

Fix 2: Turn Off Follow-Up Mode

Follow-Up Mode accepts another command without requiring the wake word again. Try saying "Alexa, turn off Follow-Up Mode," or change the device setting below. Amazon's Follow-Up Mode instructions cover both methods. Its behavior differs between speakers and compatible Echo Show screens.

How to Disable Follow-Up Mode:

  1. Open the Alexa App on your smartphone.
  2. Tap Devices.
  3. Select the device that is causing issues.
  4. Tap the Settings (Gear Icon) in the top right.
  5. Scroll down to Follow-Up Mode and toggle it OFF.

Fix 3: Restart Your Echo (Power Cycle)

If the blue light is frozen and the device does not respond, restart it before changing settings.

  1. Disconnect the Echo's power adapter from the outlet or the device.
  2. Wait 30 seconds.
  3. Plug it back in and wait for startup to finish.

After startup, ask a simple question and check whether the light ends after the response.

Fix 4: Change the Wake Word

If the Echo lights up during TV or conversation, it may have mistaken another sound for the wake word.

Try another wake word supported by your device, then review Voice History to see whether false starts become less frequent.

  1. In the Alexa App, go to Devices > [Your Device] > Settings.
  2. Scroll to Wake Word.
  3. Change it from "Alexa" to "Amazon," "Echo," or "Computer."

Fix 5: Check Voice History

If the device lights up without a clear command, Voice History may help you identify the sound it treated as a wake word.

Open More > Alexa Privacy and select Review Alexa History. Review the device and time of the unexpected activation. Amazon's current Alexa privacy controls explain this path. If entries came from a TV, move the Echo or change its wake word. Its voice-agent privacy guidance also describes history controls.

When the Light Still Will Not Clear

For a frozen light, follow the checks for an Echo with a stuck blue ring. If the ring slowly spins after power-up, use the Echo startup and spinning checks. Save resets for last.
