Where to Place a Leak Sensor for a Washing Machine

Where to place a leak sensor for a washing machine depends on the floor and the likely water path. Start on the floor at the rear of the washer, close to the hot and cold supply hoses and the drain hose. If water runs toward a different low point, move the sensor into that path.
One sensor is often enough for a small laundry closet, but it cannot detect water that flows away from it. A wide laundry room, raised pedestal, drain pan, or front-loading washer may need a second spot sensor or a sensing cable.
Best Washer Leak Sensor Location
- Start at the rear: Put a spot sensor below or near the water connections and drain hose.
- Follow the floor: Use the lowest point or the path water takes across a sloped floor.
- Use the drain pan: Put the sensing contacts inside the pan at its lowest reachable point.
- Add front coverage when needed: Front-loader door, filter, and pump leaks may appear in front of the machine.
- Keep it serviceable: Place the sensor where you can test it, dry it, and replace its battery.
Start Near the Supply Hoses and Drain
The rear of the washer is the best first location because several water connections meet there. A supply hose can split or loosen, a valve can drip, and the drain hose can move or overflow. Place a puck-style sensor flat on the floor with its sensing contacts in the position required by its manual.
YoLink's laundry leak sensor placement guide recommends the floor next to the washing machine, ideally at the rear near the water connections. It also recommends putting the sensor in the drain pan when the washer has one.
Do not balance the sensor on a hose, hide it on top of the washer, or leave it behind a wall plate. Water has to touch the sensing contacts. The main sensor body may also need to stay dry when it uses a separate probe or sensing cable.
Use the Lowest Point on the Floor
A sensor close to the hoses can still miss a leak if the floor slopes the other way. Look for a floor drain, grout line, threshold, or low corner that guides water. A washer on a pedestal can also change the path by sending water down one side.
Test the path with a few controlled drops of clean water in safe spots around the washer. Keep water away from outlets and the appliance body. Watch where it runs, wipe it up, and place the sensor in the earliest shared path. Moen's water detector placement instructions also tell owners to put a standalone detector directly on the floor with the sensing side positioned as directed.

If the Washer Is in a Drain Pan
Put the sensing contacts inside the pan, not on the floor outside it. Choose the low point that fills first. Keep the sensor clear of the washer feet and any sharp edge, and make sure the washer cannot slide into it during a spin cycle.
A pan can contain a small leak and direct water to a drain, but it does not stop the water supply. Check that the pan drain is clear and that the sensor can still send an alert from inside the pan. Metal cabinets, concrete, and distance can weaken some wireless signals.
When One Sensor Is Not Enough
Use a second sensor when the front and rear leak paths do not meet quickly. This is common with front-loading washers, large rooms, uneven tile, and washers on pedestals. Put the first sensor near the hoses and drain. Put the second near the front filter, door area, or floor low point.
A rope sensor can cover a wider path with one device. Route it across the rear and along the side where water is likely to travel. Do not run it through the door opening, under a sharp washer foot, or against hot and moving parts.
Test the Alert and Water Shutoff
Test the sensor before placing the washer back against the wall. Wet only the approved sensing contacts, confirm the local alarm and phone alert, then dry the sensor as the maker directs. Repeat the test after battery changes, router changes, or moving the washer.

Even an automatic system needs a clear manual shutoff and regular testing. Keep the washer hoses in good condition, leave the valves accessible, and make sure everyone in the home knows how to close the water if the sensor alarms.
